Set 1 The Wood Shop Tool Set

The “Background” is a book which contains information about furniture making that is basic to this on-line furniture making course, which you can download or buy direct from us, and Article 22 gives a list of recommended tools for this course.. The manuals move on from here – this is stuff I don’t want to have to repeat in the manuals, from timber drying to local history.

Some people already have tools, some want to know what they will need and article 22 in the “Background” deals with that. I am taking this one step further and providing this as a set..

These are not “discounted” tools; they are good quality, tried and tested, middle of the road items which I have been selling for years and are used in my workshop by ourselves and by evening class people.

I know these tools well and can recommend them. Some of them are “top of the range” like the E.T. Roberts and Lee Cross-cut Panel saw which is hand-built with a walnut handle and taper-ground, skew back, alloy-steel blade. This one can be sharpened! - Use old “hardpoint” saws for cutting man-made boards and old wood with hidden nails, keep this one for best, and unlike the hardpoints, it will become a family heirloom.

The ECE 101S Triplane has a hornbeam sole and beech body and is ideal for using as a jointer in a shooting board. That’s what we use at the evening classes and, so far, no complaints. The wedge adjustment takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s worth it. I’m going to do a blurb on this soon with a video link, you might find that helpful.

The Bowsaw is discussed in an earlier blurb – again it’s by ECE as is the Blockplane which has a lignum vitae (self-lubricating and wear resistant) sole and the usual high quality steel blade.

The Chisels are bevelled cabinet-makers’ pattern with hornbeam handles and steel ferrules, from ECE.

The smoothing plane is by “Faithfull” and is nicely made at a good price – except for the chipbreaker which is badly machined. I have replaced this with a Clifton two-piece version – this will beef-up any smoothing plane.

Most of the other items are by Crown, ECE, and Record and the set comes complete with a durable canvas and webbing bag; the handles are rope reinforced round the entire body of the bag for strength.

So, all the items in this set form the background to a lifetime of carefree cabinet-making? Well, I wouldn’t say that, but look after them and you’ll be fine until the next mistake! See us at http://www.wood-shop.co.uk
